Almost Honest Christians Week 3: Admission Message Summary: Too many of us ask too few questions about the Bible. We don’t get it, but we fail to admit it. Sadly, however, it is impossible for us to enjoy and to apply what we don’t understand. This is why asking for understanding is essential to our spiritual growth, a principle that both Ezra and the Apostle Paul employed in their ministries. Our potential problem: When it comes to the Bible… Some know much, most know some, while others know none. ✦ God’s goal = You get it. ✦ Proof #1 — ❖ Nehemiah 8:2-3 — So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. ❖ Nehemiah 8:7-9 — The Levites…instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. 9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. ❖ Nehemiah 8:11-12 — The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” 12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. Planting Jesus Roots GATHER — How often should churches explain things like the Lord’s Prayer or the Apostles’ Creed? What are the pros and cons of offering explanations every week? GROUP — Humility is a key to spiritual growth. Why is this especially true for people who are new to the Bible? GROW — Read the entire story of the Ethiopian in Acts 8:26-40, noting his problem, the solution, and the results of his admission of ignorance. GIVE — How is slowing down to ensure that your friends/kids/etc. understand God’s Word an example of a giving, generous spirit? GO — Next week begins a sermon series on the true identity of Jesus.
