The Great Commandment
• Series: Reset
Reset Week 1: The Great Commandment Message Summary: Do you ever wonder what God wants you to do with your life? What your God-given purpose is? Jesus kept it wonderfully simple for those who have been transformed by God’s love: Love God. Love people. This is the higher calling giving to every believer who knows that He first loved us. ✦ God’s Goals for Your Soul: Week #1: Priorities (The Great Commandment) Week #2: Purpose (The Great Commission) Week #3: Place (The Great Question) ✦ Matthew 22:34-36 — Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” ✦ Matthew 22:37-40 — Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” ✦ Matthew 22:37-38 — Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. ✦ Reset Takeaways — Priorities 1. Loving you was, is and always will be God’s priority. ❖ 1 John 4:1, 8-10 — “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world….8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 2. Loving God involves prioritizing what God loves. ❖ 1 John 5:3 — In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome. 3. Prioritizing God is our joyful response to God first loving us. ❖ 1 John 4:19 — We love because he first loved us. ✦ 1 John 3:1 — See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! Planting Jesus Roots GATHER — If you joyfully prioritized God’s commandment to gather with others for worship, what would change in your schedule in the year to come? GROUP — Discuss with a friend (or your Life Group) the area of your life where you find it most difficult to prioritize God. GROW — Revisit Matthew 22:36-40. What other details do you notice in this section that weren’t focused on in the sermon? GIVE — Are you worried about putting God first in your finances? Look at Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-34. Which of his comforting promises jumps off the page at you? GO — Evaluate this statement: Many people aren’t interested in church because they only know about God’s commandments (do this/don’t do that for God) and not God’s promises (God did this for you).
